Welcome to the Bright IDEAS Problem-Solving Skills Training (PSST) application page. Registration for these workshops and follow up support is limited to professionals (i.e., nurses, social workers, counsellors, clergy, psychologists) who are currently providing psychosocial care to children with cancer and their families. The Bright IDEAS paradigm of PSST is an evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy designed to help develop constructive coping skills in caregivers of children recently diagnosed with cancer. Bright IDEAS has been found to be more effective in alleviating distress than treatment as usual or non-directive supportive therapy. Because this is a skills-based intervention, its benefits persist and may be enhanced over time. We have adopted the anonymous saying: “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime” to explain the results of our research findings months after the intervention has been completed. While Bright IDEAS is effective for virtually any caregiver, we have found it to be most effective with young, single, low SES, or minority caregivers.
Enrollment is limited, so register now. The workshop includes 1.5 days of face-to-face training and 4 follow-up phone consultation sessions to support effective use of Bright IDEAS. Participants must agree to provide this intervention to a minimum of three caregivers or patients with cancer or survivors at their home institution during the 6 months following the workshop. With each caregiver or patient, we expect the psychosocial professional to help them to solve 2-3 problems with Bright IDEAS, and you will participate in the 4 follow-up phone consultation sessions. You will be asked to include a letter from your direct supervisor supporting the time needed to support this NCI supported endeavor.
Those accepted for training will receive up to $1000 to cover transportation and 2 nights lodging at the meeting hotel. Lunches, breakfasts, and snacks during the workshop are included (all from the NCI).
