Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram (echo) is a test that helps doctors evaluate the strength and function of a child's heart. The test uses sound waves to create a picture of the heart.

In preparation, a clear, cold jelly is placed on the chest. The person doing the test (technician) will move a small round handle (transducer) across the chest that sends sound waves to the heart. Having an echo does not hurt or have side effects.
