A Letter From Dr. Hawkins: What Gives Me Hope About the Future of Pediatric Cancer Research

Turning Findings Into Futures.

Every year, members of Children’s Oncology Group (COG) come together at our Fall Group Meeting to share insights, ask important questions, and reconnect with our shared purpose.

This year’s meeting left me inspired and hopeful for the future of pediatric cancer research. Being surrounded by so many dedicated researchers, clinicians, and partners reminded me of the extraordinary possibilities that emerge when we work together.

Every breakthrough begins with research. Long before a discovery changes a child’s care, researchers are asking difficult questions, testing new approaches, and building on what others have learned.

In the last year, COG has activated 10 new research studies. They are exploring new approaches to treatment, ways to reduce complications, and opportunities to improve care for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer. Each study represents a new opportunity to discover something that could change futures.

Over the decades, the progress we’ve made together has transformed what is possible for many children diagnosed with cancer. Treatments have advanced, outcomes have improved, and more children have opportunities to grow up and build futures of their own.

But while we have accomplished a great deal, important challenges remain. Too many children still face cancers with limited treatment options, and too many survivors experience lasting effects from the treatments that saved their lives.

What gives me hope is this community’s determination to keep moving forward. Researchers, healthcare professionals, families, advocates, and supporters all play a role in advancing progress and pursuing better futures for children and adolescents with cancer.

As we approach the end of 2026, I invite you to reflect with us on how far we’ve come and the opportunities ahead. There is much more work to do. And I am deeply hopeful about what is possible when we work together.
